Who is ICRNZ?

The New Zealand coffee industry was built on the back of small independent coffee roasters. These people, their passion, their craft, have made the New Zealand coffee industry what it is today.

In recent years, there has been a massive shift. Many of the well-established independent coffee roasters have been sold to foreign multinational corporations and investment companies. These companies are focused on profits and turnover. They are well financed and have the ability to manipulate the market.

This makes business more difficult for traditional small independent coffee roasters in New Zealand. We risk losing everything that we have worked hard to create. We don't want to just sit around and see this happen so we have created this website. We hope there is enough of you out there who care about what happens to your local coffee roasters and will seek them out, support them and in turn, keep our culture of Independent Coffee Roasters of New Zealand alive.

What is an Independent Roaster?

What we mean by "independent" is a business that is owned by a person or a small group of people who operate it or are very involved in its operations.

We want you to know that the roasteries listed in this directory are not just another asset of a large corporation focused on profit and paying shareholders, or owned by foreign interests. The roasters featured here are small, often family-owned, Kiwi businesses run by passionate people who's ultimate goal is to offer quality coffee.

Most are wholesalers and can supply your business or office. Some are labeled as 'microroasters' and operate very small shops that can only fulfil retail orders.

Browse the list below to discover which roastery near you is 100% independently NZ owned and operated.
